File entry one : Ghosts

Death has been said to be the only certainty in life. From infancy to old age and every stage between, it leads us to exit the stage as Shakespeare wrote.  It leads us toward death. Almost universally though, in nearly every religion and culture throughout history there has been the idea of an afterlife. The idea that our physical existence while temporal, merely leads to a spiritual metamorphosis, an eternal life. Some are thought to be sent to paradise, some thought to be sent to punishment. A third option according to these traditions, is to be a interloper between the two planes of existence, to be a spirit, to be a ghost.

Some are thought to be lost souls with “unfinished business” tying them to the realm of the living. Some are said to linger behind certain places haunting people and or places that they are thought to be connected with. Some while thought to be harmless much like Casper the friendly ghost, some are thought to have  malevolent  intentions. The intent of our file entries are to give a comprehensive guide to the topics we cover and to help the reader determine what the truth about the entries may be.

The picture in the header is of chateau laroche. A castle built by world war one veteran Harry Andrews. Construction for it began in the 1920’s and was worked on for over fifty years until his death in 1981. Andrews was inspired by french castles and built the castle for his boy scout troop the knights of the golden trail. Our intrigue with the topic of ghosts was spurred on by the story told by a family member of  mine..  The castle according to them and many others is said to be haunted since before even Andrews death.

According to the family member, after their house burnt down they were allowed to live in the castle for a time. There were unusual things said to have happened, a chair rocking itself, footsteps heard in empty rooms and chess pieces moving themselves. I even recall a salad bowl seemingly being “thrown” out of nowhere. The true reason this topic has been so seared into my brain is because of the most unbelievable story they told me. They told, that one night while their aunts and uncles were over. The women were putting the children to sleep and as they were, a ghost was seen creeping around a corner, holding its finger up to its “lips” as if to shush them before it ran up a flight of stairs.

While I could not help but feel skeptical of those claims multiple people were there and all of whom I spoke to claim the same things. Which made me wonder, are ghosts real? Were they lying to me?  Could something so fantastic be true? If they are real….then what are they? Are they lost souls stuck in between the living and the dead, evil forces hiding to scare the living shit out of us or as some religions will say merely demons attempting to scare and mislead people.

Some research has suggested seeing ghosts is nothing more than mold induced hallucinations. While fascinating and it may have truth, would not seem to explain the case of the Loveland castle. (another name for chateau LaRoche) Neither would research proposed by Michael Preisinger neuroscientist of  Laurentian University in Ontario, Canada, who theorized that magnetic fields could induce feelings of panic such as a perceived presence. He even tested this theory which showed that 80% of the subjects felt a presence. There could be a even more extraordinary explanation for ghosts one that deals with the more complicated nature of physics.

Highly regarded theoretical physicist Michio Kaku put forth the possibility that what we see as ghosts are in reality due to the overlapping of parallel universes.  Universes similar enough whose atoms vibrate at similar frequencies could allow for a somewhat of an overlap of universes allowing people to see what we think of as ghosts but in reality is a glimpse of another world. Maybe this could explain the Loveland castle incident, but the ghosts in the story seemed to INTERACT with my family which seems more than a gaze into another world and more like a person from another world was momentarily in ours.  This could also be the case. Yet another possibly theory is the time slip theory. That these “ghosts” are nothing more than an abnormality of the space time continuum. Where one time overlaps with another giving us a glimpse to the past. This could explain seeing ghosts of dead inhabitants in a house for example. The observers would merely be seeing a snapshot in time.

Ultimately the answer to the question, “Are ghosts real?” I can give no conclusive answer to.  To answer that question perhaps depends on how we define a ghost. Is it a spirit of a dead person? An overlapping of a parallel universe or time? The latter two seem more compelling to me in my honest estimation, if they exist at all. Ultimately i’ll leave the answer to you the reader to decide. So concludes the first entry into the Farmer files. Thank you to my dear readers I appreciate your time and thirst for truth.
